U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the United States has become the richest country in the world after he imposed trade tariffs.
“Right now, with the tariffs put in place, we’ve become, I think, the richest nation in the world, the United States, and we’re making hundreds of billions of dollars,” Trump told reporters.
Trump has previously said the United States has earned more than $200 billion from import tariffs , but he intends to increase that figure to $1 trillion a year.
According to data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the United States’ gross domestic product (GDP) ranks first in the world.
