Russian Satellite News Agency, Washington: White House National Economic Council Director Hassett said on July 14 that Trump has been constantly criticizing the current Federal Reserve Chairman Powell, and the next Federal Reserve leader should be someone who is pragmatic on the issue of interest rates.
Trump continues to harshly criticize the Fed chairman for cutting interest rates too slowly. During the NATO summit, he again called Powell “a very mediocre person”. Previously, Trump has mentioned several times that he might fire the Fed chairman. But American experts believe that from a legal perspective, it is almost impossible for Trump to fire the independent Fed chairman.
“The chairman of the Federal Reserve should be a pragmatist pursuing dual goals. This is the job of the Federal Reserve. But the Fed failed to do this when inflation got out of control during Biden’s tenure. I believe that the next chairman of the Federal Reserve will not repeat the same mistake,” Hassett said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”
At the same time, the US media listed Hassett himself as one of the most likely candidates for Fed Chairman after Powell leaves office in May 2026. Other potential candidates include former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant.
