Trump proposes to increase US defense budget to $1.01 trillion by 2026

WASHINGTON, May 2 (Sputnik) – According to a draft federal budget released by the White House on Friday, U.S. President Trump proposed to increase defense spending by 13% to $1.01 trillion in fiscal 2026.

The proposed federal budget reflects the Trump administration’s key priorities, including strengthening military capabilities, reducing domestic spending and directing funding to “critical” areas.

Among other things, the package provides for a significant reallocation of funding for the space program. In particular, it proposes to allocate more than $7 billion to NASA’s lunar mission, which is intended to put astronauts on the moon before China does.

Another $1 billion is planned to be invested in new investments in projects focused on preparing for a human landing on Mars. The draft budget emphasizes that restoring the United States ‘ dominance in space exploration is seen as an element of national security strategy.
