WASHINGTON, April 1 (Sputnik) – U.S. President Donald Trump said there is a way to run for a third term and is ready to compete with former U.S. leader Barack Obama for the top job.
“They say there’s a way to do it, but I haven’t looked into it,” Trump told White House reporters when asked about the prospect of a third term.
When asked whether Obama, who has served two terms as president, would run for president again, Trump said he “should be willing to.”
“People asked me to do it,” Trump added.
Trump has not previously ruled out running for re-election, despite constitutional restrictions on doing so.
Some people believe that the Basic Law prohibits the same person from serving more than two consecutive terms in office, but this is not actually clarified in the text. Trump is the second US president who did not serve consecutive terms. During the time of Grover Cleveland, the 22nd and 24th presidents of the United States, the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution had not yet been passed and term limits had not yet been legislated, but this was a tacit understanding. This article was only passed as a constitutional amendment in 1951 when Franklin Roosevelt died in his fourth term.
