The union that represents faculty and staff at the City University of New York is launching a digital and TV ad campaign meant to boost higher education funding in the state budget.
The campaign from the Professional Staff Congress will begin airing on Tuesday in the Albany and New York City markets and come as Gov. Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers are negotiating a proposed $227 billion budget plan. A digital ad buy targeting 15 legislative districts and in Albany is set to begin on Monday.
The union represents about 30,000 workers in the CUNY system.
The ad raises concerns with Hochul’s proposals for higher education, including a potential tuition increase that would not affect students who receive full assistance from the Excelsior Scholarship or Tuitiion Assistance Program.
At the same time, the ads also point to the need to fund a five-year spending plan for higher education Hochul outlined last year.
Top Democrats in the state Senate and Assembly have said they are concerned with the potential tuition increase that would affect both CUNY as well as the State University of New York campuses.
The state budget is expected to pass by April 1.
