Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will draw up a list of weapons and basic necessities that the Ukrainian army needs and submit it for consideration to a group of Republican Party officials who visited Ukraine this week. According to CNN, citing sources familiar with the details of the meeting between the Ukrainian president and American deputies, the congressmen promised to review this list.
Ukraine’s needs
Zelensky, who met with House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Michael McCaul and four other congressmen, told US politicians he plans to send a list of weapons, including F-16 fighters, needed to speed up an end to the war with Russia.
A senior U.S. military commander reiterated to a group of Republican lawmakers that Ukraine will need F-16 fighter jets and long-range missiles, one source said.
“There is broad bipartisan support between the United States and our NATO and European allies to support Ukraine against Russian aggression. We had a very productive meeting with President Zelensky. We mainly talked about what he needs in terms of winning this war,” McCaul said after visiting the congressional hearing.
“We’ll stay here as long as necessary.” And I hope it won’t take long to win this war. And on top of that, we have strong bipartisan support to give Ukraine everything it needs to win,” McCall added.
Jets for Ukraine?
Zelensky’s specific goal – to acquire US F-16 fighter jets – is becoming an increasingly controversial issue , writes CNN. Both President Biden and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley had previously opposed such a move due to fears it could escalate the conflict.
But the argument against delivering the F-16 is getting harder and harder to sustain. According to CNN sources, senior military commanders privately admitted to Republican congressmen in recent days that these weapons would help Ukraine win the war.
