DHS probes Swalwell over allegations of hiring nanny illegally

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is looking into Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), who has recently faced sexual assault allegations, over allegations of hiring a nanny illegally.

In a statement to The Hill’s broadcast partner NewsNation, a spokesperson for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said it “has been collecting information on the allegations involving Congressman Eric Swalwell[‘s] hiring of a Brazilian national as a nanny without lawful work authorization.”

“These allegations are serious. USCIS has referred this matter to DHS law enforcement for investigation,” USCIS, which is a part of DHS, added in its statement.

Swalwell on Friday separately denied allegations of sexual assault while facing mounting calls to exit the race for California governor. A former staffer alleged Swalwell had sexually assaulted her twice when she was too intoxicated to give consent, the San Francisco Chronicle first reported. CNN also reported that three additional women had accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct.

The California Democrat referred to the assault claims as “flat false” in a video statement posted on the social platform X on Friday.

“They are absolutely false. They did not happen,” Swalwell said. “They have never happened, and I will fight them with everything that I have. They also come on the eve of an election where I have been the front-runner candidate for governor in California.”

USCIS said in its statement that “federal law prohibits employers from knowingly hiring aliens who are not authorized to work in the United States.”

“No employer, including a member of Congress, is above the law,” the spokesperson continued.
