A human skull was found during an Easter egg hunt in a Southern California park, authorities said Monday.
The remains were found Sunday afternoon in Long Beach’s De Forest Park, the city’s police department said in a statement.
Officials later confirmed the skull was human, a police spokeswoman said. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office said a mandible was also recovered.
NBC Los Angeles reported that they were found near a walking trail.
The Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman, Andrea Moran, said the skull was found during an independent event at the roughly 50-acre park, which includes a river parkway, trails and freshwater wetlands.
The park is roughly 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.
Additional details about the remains were not immediately available.
