President Trump said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is slowing down a peace deal for the war in Ukraine, according to Reuters.
“I think he’s ready to make a deal,” Trump said during a Reuters interview, talking about Russian President Vladimir Putin. “I think Ukraine is less ready to make a deal.”
When Reuters pressed the president on why negotiations headed up by the U.S. were not finding a solution to the end of the war, Trump said “Zelensky.”
Throughout Trump’s second term, his administration has pushed for an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine, to little success. The president has met with Zelensky multiple times and met with Putin in Alaska a few months ago.
Late last month, Trump met with Zelensky at Mar-a-Lago. During a joint press conference after their meeting, the two leaders said that there was forward motion on a 20-point peace proposal supported by Zelensky.
“Our meeting was excellent, we covered — somebody would say 95 percent, I don’t know what percent — but we have made a lot of progress on ending that war,” Trump said during the press conference.
However, when Trump was asked at the press conference about “the thorniest issues still unresolved,” he responded that land was one of them.
“I think the land — you’re talking about — some of that land has been taken. Some of that land is maybe up for grabs, but it may be taken over the next period of a number of months — and you’re better off making a deal now,” Trump said.
