Most Americans oppose military action in Venezuela: Poll

Most Americans are against military action in Venezuela after recent tension in the region, according to a new poll from CBS News/YouGov.

In the poll, 70 percent said they were against “the U.S. taking military action in Venezuela,” while 30 percent said they were for it.

The U.S. military has recently bolstered its presence near Venezuela, with the USS Gerald R. Ford making its way to the Caribbean and President Trump allowing the CIA to go ahead with covert operations inside Venezuela.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently advised pilots to “exercise caution” when they are near Venezuela due to the “worsening security situation and heightened military activity” in and around the country.

The agency’s Friday advisory said that “threats could pose a potential risk to aircraft at all altitudes” in the Maiquetia Flight Information Region.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Thursday the Trump administration’s choice to label Venezuela’s Cartel de los Soles a foreign terrorist organization allowed his department “new options” to target the alleged drug cartel. Officials have claimed the cartel is led by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

“Well, it brings a whole bunch of new options to the United States,” Hegseth said in an interview that aired on Thursday.

When asked in the CBS News/YouGov poll about the amount they had “heard or read about the U.S. military buildup in the Caribbean Sea near Venezuela,” 20 percent said “a lot,” 40 percent said “some,” 19 percent said “not much” and 20 percent said “nothing at all.”

The CBS News/YouGov poll took place from Nov. 19 to 21, included 2,489 people and had around plus or minus 2.4 percentage points as its margin of error.
