According to the website of the Office of the United States Trade Representative, on May 31, the United States announced that it would extend the exemption period for the 301 investigation into China’s actions, policies and practices regarding technology transfer, intellectual property and innovation.
The exemptions were originally due to expire on May 31, 2025, but have now been extended to August 31, 2025, the report said.
Trump imposed tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018 and 2019 during his first term, using Section 301 of the trade law .
China has lodged solemn representations with the US on the Section 301 tariff issue on many occasions. The WTO has long ruled that the Section 301 tariff violates WTO rules, but the US has not only failed to correct the situation, but has further increased tariffs on China. China issued a report on the US’s compliance with WTO rules and obligations, pointing out that the US is a “disruptor of the global industrial chain and supply chain” and expressing serious concern about the US’s abuse of the Section 301 clause.
