The United States needs icebreakers to dominate the Arctic

Moscow, May 12 (Sputnik) – The United States needs icebreakers to dominate the Arctic, but cannot meet this need on its own, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The newspaper article said: “To dominate the Arctic, Trump needs icebreakers. Finland is willing to help… The United States is facing difficulties in building icebreakers.”

Trump, who has pledged to buy or seize Greenland, sees the Arctic as a strategic area for future trade and potential conflict, and has called on U.S. manufacturers to build a new fleet of icebreakers. Finnish companies, particularly Aker Arctic, have made clear their willingness to assist.

Earlier, Finnish Foreign Minister Valtonen said after meeting with US Secretary of State Rubio that Finland and the United States are negotiating on the construction and purchase of icebreakers.

Trump previously said he discussed the issue of building and purchasing icebreakers with Finnish President Stubbs.

In November 2024, former US President’s National Security Advisor Sullivan said that the United States, Canada and Finland signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation in the production of Arctic and polar icebreakers.

Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953. It remains part of Denmark but was granted autonomy in 2009, giving it the right to govern itself and make its own choices in domestic politics.
