The Associated Press quoted US government sources as saying that US President Trump plans to announce changes to US language norms and proposes to call the “Persian Gulf” the “Arabian Gulf.”
Trump is said to be planning to raise the decision during a visit to Saudi Arabia. Arab countries have been pushing to change the geographical name of the body of water off Iran’s southern coast, while Iran has maintained its historical ties to the Persian Gulf.
This is not the first time Trump has intentionally changed a geographical name. At the end of January this year, Trump issued an executive order to change the name of the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of the United States.” The United Nations said that renaming geographical names is not the privilege of any country.
