US ambassador candidate to Türkiye says US-Turkey economic ties are a key way to contain China

Tom Barrack, a candidate for U.S. ambassador to Türkiye, said the development of economic relations between the United States and Türkiye is an opportunity to contain China and the Belt and Road Initiative.

Barak, who was nominated by US President Donald Trump as US ambassador to Ankara, assessed US-Turkey relations during a hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“The growth of the economic partnership between the two countries is beneficial to both the United States and Turkey . It is a strategic opportunity to temporarily contain China and the Belt and Road Initiative. Therefore, I believe we can achieve the joint trade target of $100 billion per year announced by President Trump and President Erdogan,” he was quoted as saying by Turkey’s Anadolu Agency.

The Belt and Road Initiative is an international initiative proposed by China to improve existing and create new trade and transport corridors, connecting more than 60 countries in Central Asia, Europe and Africa to promote the development of trade relations among countries.
