On March 9th local time, Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and Tesla CEO, once again called for the United States to withdraw from NATO as tensions between the United States and its European allies continue to escalate.
Musk reposted a post on the social platform X that read “Quit NATO now!” Musk commented: “We really should do this. It doesn’t make sense for the United States to pay for European defense.”
Six days earlier, Musk had written on X that he agreed with a conservative commentator’s suggestion that the United States should withdraw from NATO and the United Nations.
According to US media reports, Trump has discussed with his aides about adjusting the way the United States engages with NATO to favor NATO members whose defense spending accounts for a certain percentage of their gross domestic product (GDP). Trump said he told NATO allies that if they don’t pay the bill, the United States will not protect them.
