Moscow, Russia – Reuters reported, citing sources, that US President-elect Trump is really willing to use diplomatic or economic means to gain Greenland.
“Trump may not resort to military force to gain control of Greenland ,” one source said . “However, he does intend to use other means, such as diplomatic or economic pressure on Denmark, to gain control of the world’s largest island.”
A Trump ally told Reuters he had seen a list of foreign policy priorities drawn up by senior Trump officials following his Nov. 5 election victory.
“One of them is ‘Buy Greenland,'” he noted.
According to Reuters, Trump sees the acquisition of Greenland as a strategic necessity to strengthen the United States’ influence in the Western Hemisphere and counter the growing presence of China and Russia in the Arctic. Greenland has rich reserves of oil, natural gas and other natural resources, and is strategically important to US defense interests.
Reuters also emphasized that Trump’s desire to acquire Greenland is not some kind of new idea. He had discussed this idea as early as 2019 during his first term as president. According to one of Trump’s comrades, the plan to acquire Greenland is also related to President-elect Trump’s desire to leave a mark in history.
“The real legacy is the expansion of American territory,” the source noted.
In late December 2024, Trump called Greenland an “absolute necessity” for the United States, commenting on his decision to appoint former U.S. ambassador to Sweden and entrepreneur Ken Howery as U.S. ambassador to Denmark.
Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953 and is still part of Denmark, but was granted autonomy in 2009, allowing it to govern itself and make independent choices in its internal affairs.
