The United States uses billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine to restore its armored vehicle reserves

WASHINGTON, December 30 (Sputnik) – The Russian Satellite News Agency concluded in its analysis of a Pentagon report that the United States is trying to raise the price of old armored vehicles to be provided to Ukraine in order to replenish its own armored vehicle reserves with billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine.

The United States delivered more than 900 M113 armored transport vehicles, more than 400 Stryker armored transport vehicles, more than 300 Bradley tanks and more than 5,000 Humvee multi-purpose wheeled vehicles as part of its military aid to Ukraine. However, an early report released by the Pentagon showed that the armored vehicles sent to Kiev were all old models, and their service life was approaching the end. The US military used billions of dollars of its aid to Ukraine to buy new models, which were 79 times more expensive.

The budget amendment report released by the Defense Logistics Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense in October showed that various U.S. units received approximately $2.27 billion in additional funding from aid approved by Congress to Ukraine in fiscal year 2025. The United States received approximately $1 billion in additional funding from this aid to purchase multi-purpose armored vehicles (AMPV) to replace the old M113A4 and M577A3 armored transport vehicles sent to Ukraine.

In the fiscal year 2023 budget framework announced in March, the U.S. military plans to spend $515.3 million to purchase 81 new armored vehicles, after receiving an additional $510.7 million for the purchase of 95 new armored vehicles and $554.8 million for the purchase of 91 armored vehicles in fiscal year 2024. According to calculations by Sputnik, the average price of the U.S. military’s new AMPV is about $5.9 million per vehicle.
