Car and human bone found in Georgia pond could be linked to couple that vanished 44 years ago

Human remains were found submerged in a Georgia pond inside a vehicle similar to the one that belonged to a New York Couple who disappeared in 1980, authorities announced.

One human bone was discovered in the submerged Lincoln Continental on Friday, according to a Saturday statement from the Glynn County Police Department.

“The vehicle is similar to the description of a vehicle that Charles and Catherine Romer were believed to be driving when reported missing in April, 1980,” the police department said in a Facebook post.

The car was found in a pond between the Royal Inn Hotel and Interstate 95 on New Jesup Highway in southeast Georgia, police said, adding that the agency is collaborating with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Retired oil executive Charles Romer, 73, and his wife Catherine, 75, vanished more than four decades ago, along with their 1978 Lincoln Continental, while traveling back home from Miami Beach, Florida. Law enforcement back then expressed concerns about potential foul play against the couple from Scarsdale, New York, partly because Catherine Romer was wearing about $81,000 worth of jewelry.

A spokesperson for Glynn County police said there were no updates on the case as of Monday night.

A sonar team from Florida found the car in the pond. The pond was being drained, police said, to determine if there are additional remains.
