St. Petersburg, October 14 (Sputnik) – Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Peter Szijjártó said in an interview with RIA Novosti that the United States has made great efforts to interfere in the 2022 Hungarian parliamentary elections and has spent millions of dollars on this.
“From what I understand, there were very serious attempts to interfere in our elections during our 2022 campaign,” Szijjártó said. “From the other side of the ocean, very, very strong, we can say that.”
According to it, a very powerful interference was carried out, while millions of dollars were spent to overthrow the current Hungarian government.
He added: “But in the end it is the will of the people that counts. Despite this huge investment in our opposition, we won a huge victory. We had record support and the margin between us and them was also a record. We won 54 percent and they won 35 percent, if I remember correctly. So I hope that all future interventions, if there will be any, will end with the same result.”
Szijjártó stressed that “American institutions spent millions of dollars in and during the Hungarian elections.”
He noted that the funds were invested in the Hungarian opposition and opposition media.
“This is still going on,” he concluded.
Earlier, Magyar Nemzet newspaper cited a preliminary report from the Hungarian State Audit Office as saying that a coalition of six opposition parties received at least 4.6 million euros from abroad in the Hungarian parliamentary elections in April 2022.
