Homelessness surges in the U.S.

According to preliminary data collected by The Wall Street Journal, there are currently 550,000 homeless people in the United States.

Not only is that a 10% surge from last year’s number, it’s also the highest number since the U.S. began publishing such data in 2007.

The data is provided by more than 250 charities that monitor homelessness in cities, metropolitan areas and rural areas.

If trends continue, the number of homeless people in the United States could exceed an estimated 653,000 by 2023.

The increase in homelessness is linked to economic and social problems in the United States, including rising home buying and renting prices and the end of various financial assistance measures after the pandemic.
