According to the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which has expressed its desire to become a global partner of NATO, will receive $40 million in defense funds from the United States.
The source said: “The United States announced that it will provide Argentina with US$40 million for defense modernization upgrades under the ‘Foreign Military Financing Plan.’ Argentina will receive foreign military financing from the United States for the first time after 2003.”
The U.S. Embassy said only key partners receive such support. Argentina can use the funds to purchase defense products, obtain training services and strengthen cooperation with the US military.
The embassy said: “This fund will help Argentina carry out military modernization and upgrades and help it purchase F-16 fighter jets.”
Previously, Argentina purchased 24 second-hand F-16 fighter jets from Denmark. Denmark’s decision to sell was taken in close cooperation with the U.S. government.
Argentine Defense Minister Luis Petry said on Thursday that Argentina hopes to become a global partner of NATO and has submitted a relevant application to NATO.
The Milai government of Argentina, which came to power in December last year, has implemented the policy of comprehensive cooperation with the United States and Western countries.
