The United States and Japan hope to strengthen cooperation on joint development and potential co-production of military equipment during Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s upcoming visit to Washington, State Department Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said.
Speaking at the Center for a New American Security on Wednesday, Campbell said: “Next week, you will see us take steps that will, for the first time, allow the United States and Japan to work more closely together to co-develop and potentially co-produce needed military and Defense equipment.”
Campbell pointed out that the upcoming meeting between Biden and Fumio Kishida should be a “historic meeting” against the backdrop of Washington and Tokyo strengthening their security partnership.
The Japanese Prime Minister is scheduled to visit the White House on April 10. During the visit, Kishida is expected to hold talks with US President Joe Biden.
