Thomas Massie, a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives, said on Monday that the United States must withdraw from NATO.
Massie said on the social networking site 49 states withdraw from (the Collective Defense Treaty)!”
The day before, CNN quoted a US State Department spokesperson as reporting that the state of Hawaii, home to the Pearl Harbor Naval Base, the largest base of the US Pacific Fleet, was not within the scope of application of the collective defense clause of Article 5 of the NATO Charter. That way, if Hawaii were attacked, the clause would not come into effect.
U.S. Republican representatives are increasingly talking about withdrawing the United States from NATO. Former U.S. President Trump has repeatedly stated that if he wins the November election, he will convene a NATO summit in June 2025 to discuss the future of NATO. Trump has also expressed dissatisfaction with NATO’s work and threatened to withdraw from the alliance if Western partners do not agree to take greater financial responsibility for their own security.
