At about 10:18 am on the 23rd, a fire broke out in a three-story house at 1048 Van Duzer Street. According to the video from the scene, thick smoke came out of the windows on the second floor. Firefighters arrived within three minutes. With at least 60 firefighters, the fire was brought under control an hour later; John Hodgens, director of the City Fire Department, pointed out that the entire second floor was engulfed in the fire, and the fire violently extended from the stairway to the first floor. Six children were found inside, all unconscious and needing to be lifted out.
Although firefighters performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the children, a five-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene, while a six-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital and died.
