US media: Trump’s victory may lead to the United States withdrawing from NATO

The New York Times pointed out in an article published on Saturday that former US President Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 US presidential election may lead to the United States withdrawing from NATO.

According to the New York Times, diplomats and NATO governments are “increasingly anxious that Trump’s return may not only abandon Ukraine, but also mean that the United States will withdraw its troops (from the European continent) and destroy NATO.”

The newspaper quoted retired U.S. Navy Admiral James Stavridis, former commander of NATO forces in Europe, as saying: “Europe is worried that Trump’s re-election as president will lead to the United States withdrawing from NATO, which will be a major change for our country. A strategic and historic failure.”

It is reported that representatives of most European countries do not know what approach to take if Trump wins the presidential election. The New York Times believes that small countries can try to build relations with Trump by purchasing American weapons or adopting flattering gestures.

The next US presidential election will be held in November 2024. On April 25, current President Joe Biden announced that he would seek re-election. Trump announced his candidacy in November 2022.
