According to Reuters, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority said that hundreds of protesters called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas on the 27th, forcing Grand Central Station, one of New York City’s major transportation hubs, to close on Friday.
“Due to protests, Grand Central Terminal is closed until further notice,” the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s official website said. The department urged commuters to use other stations and plan for additional travel time.
Images on social media showed protesters streaming from a train station to 42nd Street in midtown Manhattan, where a large group was detained by law enforcement.
Jewish Voice for Peace, which organized the demonstration, posted a video on Instagram showing police escorting a long line of protesters at the station wearing shirts that read “Ceasefire Now” and “Not In Our Name” shirt, arms behind back.
“Hundreds of Jews and their allies have been arrested in what may be New York’s largest act of civil disobedience in 20 years,” the group wrote in the post.
The Israeli military on Friday expanded air and ground attacks on the Palestinian enclave of Gaza . Hamas said its militants were ready to fight Israeli attacks with “full force”.
