According to Agence France-Presse, Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio said that the United States had tried to force him to intervene in the vote counting process of the June presidential election.
Bio said in a speech at the American University in Washington that the Sierra Leone Electoral Commission conducted all necessary calculations and comparisons and concluded all processes.
Bio accused the U.S. government of trying to interfere in the election: “At that time, the U.S. asked me to prevent the election committee from announcing the results, so I didn’t know who was accusing whom of interfering.”
He also said he had not contacted the election committee. Afterwards, the US representative said that he hoped to conduct a second round of elections. Bio said that Sierra Leone has a very good relationship with the United States and hopes to maintain this relationship.
