A new New York Times/Siena College poll found that while Republicans and Democrats disagree on many things, there is a broad consensus on both sides: the belief that America is failing. Overall, 37 percent of registered voters say America is in danger of losing, and the problem is serious.
Fifty-six percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents say the U.S. is in danger of failing. About 20 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents feel the same way. This fatalistic view cuts across political parties, but the point of disagreement is how America got here.
Republican voters who are doomed to fail overwhelmingly support Trump ; most of them are older, with two-thirds of Republicans over 65 saying the country is on the brink of failure; they are less educated and more likely to be from Fox News Conservative media such as Newsmax outside of China obtained information.
Many pessimistic Republicans believe that the policies of the Biden administration have pushed the country to the brink of collapse. Margo Creamer, a 72-year-old Trump supporter from Southern California, said: “If Trump does not win the next election, America will fail.” There are also many Republicans who believe that the new crown epidemic and the resulting economic Negative impact, leading to the failure of the country.
Relatively few Democrats believe the country is on the verge of collapse, but like Republicans, women are more likely than men to share this pessimistic view. “With backsliding laws in many states, half the country’s women not being able to get abortions, gerrymandering and disenfranchisement, things continue like this and America is going to collapse,” said Brandon Thompson, a 37-year-old Democratic veteran.
In recent years, Chinese people have become more polarized in answering the question “Is the United States on the right track or has it deviated in the wrong direction?” Currently, 85 percent of Republicans think the country is on the wrong track, compared with 46 percent of Democrats. Overall, 65% of Chinese say the US is headed in the wrong direction.
