{"id":9792,"date":"2023-04-12T06:03:13","date_gmt":"2023-04-12T11:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=9792"},"modified":"2023-04-12T06:03:17","modified_gmt":"2023-04-12T11:03:17","slug":"journalists-and-activists-gather-in-dc-call-for-assanges-release-on-4-year-anniversary-of-arrest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=9792","title":{"rendered":"Journalists and Activists Gather in DC, Call for Assange\u2019s Release on 4-Year Anniversary of Arrest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Tuesday rally on behalf of the long-persecuted WikiLeaks publisher briefly took an alarming turn when one man seemingly attempted to light himself on fire in an apparent political statement.<br>Journalists, scholars and political activists descended on the Department of Justice in Washington, DC, on Tuesday to condemn the ongoing legal assault on jailed WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.<br>In an event marking the four-year anniversary of Assange\u2019s imprisonment in the UK\u2019s notorious Belmarsh prison following his forcible removal from the Ecuadorian embassy by British police, organizers denounced the Biden administration\u2019s continued persecution of the Australian editor.<br>&#8220;Today marks a total of 4,507 days of illegal and arbitrary detention&#8221; of Assange, &#8220;and it was four years ago today \u2013 1,460 days that he was \u2018essentially kidnapped from the Ecuadorian embassy and sent to \u2018the Guantanamo Bay of Britain,\u2019 Belmarsh prison, all for telling the truth,&#8221; explained Action4Assange co-host Misty Winston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event took a bizarre twist when a man with a newly-inked tattoo reading \u201cFree Assange\u201d stripped off his clothes and doused the ground with gasoline in an apparent attempt at self-immolation.
