{"id":8115,"date":"2023-03-20T07:05:54","date_gmt":"2023-03-20T12:05:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=8115"},"modified":"2023-03-20T07:05:59","modified_gmt":"2023-03-20T12:05:59","slug":"pinkerton-reflections-on-the-20th-anniversary-of-the-iraq-war-folly-lives-lost-lessons-learned-and-why-america-comes-first","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=8115","title":{"rendered":"Pinkerton: Reflections on the 20th Anniversary of the Iraq War Folly \u2014 Lives Lost, Lessons Learned, and Why America Comes First"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It had been clear that Bush wanted a war on Iraq since his January 29, 2002,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov\/news\/releases\/2002\/01\/20020129-11.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cAxis of Evil\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;speech.&nbsp;This author wrote&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/opinion\/article\/Winning-peace-in-Iraq-won-t-be-easy-2871120.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">immediately<\/a>&nbsp;that such a war would be a bad idea.&nbsp;Anticipating \u201cregime change\u201d (a nice way of saying \u201cconquer someone else\u2019s country\u201d), I wrote that we would be going into a place that we didn\u2019t know, egged on by false friends, such as the notorious double-dealer Ahmed Chalabi, who was as popular in Washington, DC, think-tanks as he was&nbsp;<em>un<\/em>popular on the streets of Baghdad. I wrote at the time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Is this what we can expect in Iraq \u2014 our chosen friends displaced by our unchosen enemies?&nbsp;There\u2019s no way to know.&nbsp;But as the American experience in Afghanistan suggests, we don\u2019t know much of anything about Muslim politics.&nbsp;Indeed, about the only thing we can know for sure about Iraq is this: American gains will be secure for only as long as Americans remain.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So,&nbsp;<em>of course<\/em>, the war proved to be a fiasco.&nbsp;As one history-minded observer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/edwest.substack.com\/p\/iraq-was-all-about-blood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;last week: \u201cThis month marks the 20th anniversary of the greatest western foreign policy disaster since the Fourth Crusade.&nbsp;It was the pre-eminent modern-day example of folly, driven by wishful thinking, utopianism and a lack of interest in history and how human societies differ.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2023\/03\/GettyImages-71644157.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1238\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From left to right: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, President George W. (TIM SLOAN\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be sure, historians will be evaluating Iraq and all its global implications for a long time to come.&nbsp;But it\u2019s already clear that the war pushed Iran, Russia, and China into a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shanghai_Cooperation_Organisation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tighter alliance<\/a>, which they considered to be self defense.&nbsp;So, how should the U.S. deal with a hostile Eurasian bloc in the heart of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/the-man-who-warned-of-america-against-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cworld island\u201d<\/a>?&nbsp;That\u2019s a riddle that will preoccupy foreign policymakers for the next hundred years or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for now, we might just consider some of the&nbsp;<em>domestic&nbsp;<\/em>effects of Bush\u2019s war.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can start with the outright costs of the war.&nbsp;Then we can observe various political costs \u2014 specifically, how the war broke the Bush political dynasty.&nbsp;More broadly, the war broke our faith in government experts. It also clarified the reality of the so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/08\/05\/establishment-uniparty-deploys-last-ditch-tactics-save-liz-cheney-defeat\/\">Uniparty<\/a>,\u201d which helped in the rise of Donald Trump in 2016.
