{"id":7650,"date":"2023-03-15T04:13:36","date_gmt":"2023-03-15T09:13:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=7650"},"modified":"2023-03-15T04:13:39","modified_gmt":"2023-03-15T09:13:39","slug":"ex-new-orleans-police-officer-sentenced-to-14-years-for-sexually-assaulting-teen-rape-victim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=7650","title":{"rendered":"Ex-New Orleans police officer sentenced to 14 years for sexually assaulting teen rape victim"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A former New Orleans police officer was sentenced to 14 years in prison on Tuesday after being convicted of sexually assaulting a teenage rape victim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rodney Vicknair was accused of assaulting a 15-year-old months after he escorted her to a hospital for care after she said she was raped by another man in May 2020, the Justice Department said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/former-new-orleans-police-officer-sentenced-sexually-assaulting-15-year-old-girl\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vicknair&#8217;s sentence is reportedly double what the Justice Department was seeking in a plea deal. U.S. District Judge Lance Africk&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lawandcrime.com\/crime\/fired-new-orleans-cop-rodney-vicknair-sentenced-to-federal-prison\/\">rejected the deal<\/a>&nbsp;on March 8, which was when sentencing was originally scheduled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a rape kit was performed on the girl, Vicknair exchanged information with her so he could stay in contact and &#8220;mentor&#8221; her, officials said. At some point, he began to make sexual comments toward her and ultimately sexually assaulted her in his truck in September 2020,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/14-year-sentence-cop-molested-teen-rape-victim-97861945\">ABC News<\/a>&nbsp;reports. He also showed up to her home unannounced on multiple occasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are grateful to this young survivor for coming forward, even though she thought no one would believe her,&#8221; Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department&#8217;s Civil Rights Division said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Had she not been willing to do so, we would not have been able to hold the defendant accountable for his heinous crime,&#8221; Clarke said. &#8220;This case should send a strong message to law-enforcement officers who sexually abuse victims, particularly children, that they are not above the law and will be held accountable.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 55-year-old former officer pleaded guilty in November to sexually assaulting the girl while acting in the capacity of a law-enforcement officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The defendant&#8217;s job was to protect a child who was a victim of sexual assault, but instead he exploited her vulnerabilities and abused his position of power to carry out his own sexual assault of the victim,&#8221; Clarke said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/former-new-orleans-police-officer-pleads-guilty-federal-civil-rights-offense-sexually\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;following Vicknair&#8217;s guilty plea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Top_News\/US\/2023\/03\/14\/new-orleans-police -sentenced-rape-justice-department-plea\/2221678831929\/\">Upi<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former New Orleans police officer was sentenced to 14 years in prison on Tuesday after being convicted of sexually assaulting a teenage rape victim.
