A 23-year-old man was taken into custody Tuesday evening in Philadelphia after a fatal hospital shooting hours earlier in nearby Delaware, police said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One person was killed and another was injured Tuesday afternoon by a shooter, who fled, police said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The attack was reported at 3:30 p.m. at ChristianaCare Wilmington Hospital in Delaware, Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos said at a news conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officers found both victims but no shooter, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Campos offered no details about the victims, including their identities or the survivor\u2019s condition, \u201cout of respect for the families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More than two hours after an early evening news conference about the attack, police said they had a suspect in custody in Philadelphia, which is a little more than 30 miles west-southwest of Wilmington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur preliminary investigation has determined that this was a targeted, isolated incident,\u201d the department said late Tuesday. \u201cThis investigation remains active and ongoing, and further information will be released as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 23-year-old\u2019s identity was not released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wilmington police said charges and extradition were pending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mayor John Carney said the attack shook Wilmington as workers at the facility were \u201cbarricaded in rooms across the hospital as law enforcement cleared each of the floors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis has been a terrible day for our city,\u201d he said at the news conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gov. Matt Meyer said his wife, Dr. Lauren Meyer, was reporting for work at the downtown hospital when the attack happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He called the hospital employees \u201cheroes involved in lifesaving efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sen. Lisa Blunt, D-Del., said she had been briefed on the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs we wait for further information, I\u2019m praying for our community and grateful for the swift and ongoing law enforcement response,\u201d she said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wilmington, the state\u2019s largest city, with a population of more than 73,000, is sometimes referred to as the \u201ccorporate capital of America\u201d because so many large corporations locate their legal addresses there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
