{"id":58175,"date":"2026-06-02T18:50:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T23:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=58175"},"modified":"2026-06-03T01:55:07","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T06:55:07","slug":"jan-6-defendant-who-said-he-was-ashamed-of-foolish-actions-now-works-at-pentagon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=58175","title":{"rendered":"Jan. 6 defendant who said he was ashamed of \u2018foolish\u2019 actions now works at Pentagon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A young man who pleaded guilty in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and apologized for his \u201cfoolish\u201d actions during what he said was \u201cwithout a doubt one of the most embarrassing days in modern American history\u201d now works at the Defense Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Elias Irizarry \u201cis a qualified, patriotic young professional, and we are proud to have him as a political appointee,\u201d acting Pentagon press secretary Joel Valdez said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Valdez did not specify the job. The Washington Post first reported his appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Irizarry was a 19-year-old student at The Citadel military college in South Carolina at the time of the riot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Federal prosecutors presented images of Irizarry entering the Capitol through a broken window while he held a metal pole and making his way into a conference room before he entered the rotunda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIrizarry joined the mob for many hours. After he armed himself with a metal pole, Irizarry watched as rioters violently assaulted officers who were trying to make their way through the crowd,\u201d prosecutors wrote in court documents related to his case. \u201cHe then climbed scaffolding to reach the upper West terrace and encouraged and directed rioters by excitedly waving rioters up the stairs to gain access to the building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds and was sentenced to 14 days behind bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Irizarry apologized for his actions in a five-page letter to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, telling her he had \u201cbrought great shame upon myself, my family, and, unfortunately, my country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have come to appreciate, through all this, how fortunate we are to have a stable government,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump pardoned Irizarry alongside hundreds of other Jan. 6 defendants on his first day back in office in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/national-security\/jan-6-defendant-said-was-ashamed-foolish-actions-now-works-pentagon-rcna348183\">Nbcnews<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A young man who pleaded guilty in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and apologized for his \u201cfoolish\u201d actions during what he said was \u201cwithout a doubt one of the most embarrassing days in modern American history\u201d now works at the Defense Department.
