NEW YORK — The long-running Broadway hit \u201cThe Book of Mormon\u201d will close its doors through May 17 as its theater undergoes repairs after a fire shut down the musical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Performances are canceled through Sunday, May 17. Ticket holders for impacted performances will be notified via their point of purchase to receive refunds or reschedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cATG Entertainment and \u2018The Book of Mormon\u2019 are currently working with a team of industry professionals to begin repairs needed to the building,\u201d according to a statement by both groups issued Wednesday. They extended \u201ctheir deepest thanks to the firefighters and emergency responders for their bravery and speedy response.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The blaze, which began May 4 in an electrical room, caused \u201csubstantial damage\u201d to the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, according to New York Fire Department Assistant Chief David Simms. The cause of the fire remains unknown. \u201cFDNY was immediately contacted, were on site within minutes, and quickly extinguished the fire,\u201d according to the latest statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Simms said the damage was largely confined to the fourth floor area and a backroom containing lighting equipment and dangling chandeliers. There was some water damage as well, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Book of Mormon\u201d is among Broadway\u2019s longest running shows, with more than 5,000 performances since opening at the Eugene O\u2019Neill Theatre in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The theater, which opened in 1925, has previously hosted productions of \u201cSweeney Todd,\u201d a revival of Tennessee Williams\u2019 \u201cCat on a Hot Tin Roof,\u201d and the rock musical \u201cSpring Awakening,\u201d among many other performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
