Texas Tech transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby is checking into a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction, the school confirmed Monday to NBC News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
NCAA rules prohibit athletes, coaches and athletic department personnel from betting on college or professional sports. In 2025, Division I schools also voted to rescind a rule that would have allowed betting on pro sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the NCAA\u2019s rules, \u201cplayers who wager on their own games\u201d could face permanent loss of eligibility in all sports. Sorsby could appeal a potential ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The NCAA told NBC News that, due to confidentiality rules, it “will not comment on current, pending or potential investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“However, the NCAA takes sports betting very seriously and is committed to the protection of student-athlete well-being and the integrity of competition. The Association works with integrity monitoring services, state regulators and other stakeholders to conduct appropriate due diligence whenever reports are received.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said in a statement, “We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help. Taking this step requires courage, and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through a spokesperson, Texas Tech said it is \u201ccommitted to supporting Brendan through his recovery process and to ensure his long-term health and well-being.\u201d The school said it would have no further comment to \u201cprotect the integrity of the recovery process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sorsby, 22, began his collegiate career at Indiana, and left the school after two years. He spent the last two seasons at Cincinnati before transferring to Texas Tech in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sorsby was highly recruited when he entered the transfer portal, and was considered a prospect for next year\u2019s NFL Draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his final season at Cincinnati, Sorsby threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns. He also ran for 580 yards and nine more scores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
