{"id":56076,"date":"2026-04-16T17:42:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T22:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=56076"},"modified":"2026-04-16T21:37:45","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T02:37:45","slug":"judge-faults-trump-for-brazen-bid-to-continue-ballroom-construction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=56076","title":{"rendered":"Judge faults Trump for &#8216;brazen&#8217; bid to continue ballroom construction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">April 16 (Reuters) &#8211; A federal judge on Thursday again ruled that \u200cU.S. President Donald Trump&#8217;s plan to build a White House ballroom without congressional approval was unlawful, faulting the Republican president for asserting that national security requirements demanded the project move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In a 10-page order, opens new tab, U.S. District Judge Richard Leon modified the wording of \u200ban injunction he issued on March 31 that had ordered construction to stop, to address Trump and \u200bfederal agencies&#8217; &#8220;brazen&#8221; and &#8220;disingenuous&#8221; interpretation of that earlier ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a \u2060nonprofit charged by Congress to help preserve historic buildings, sued the administration, asserting Trump exceeded his authority when \u200bhe razed the historic White House East Wing last October and began construction of the planned 90,000-square-foot (8,360-square-metre) ballroom, which is \u200bcosting more than $400 million and being funded by corporate donors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Leon said he was clarifying the scope of his earlier order to stop &#8220;above-ground construction of the planned ballroom&#8221; but not &#8220;below-ground construction of national security facilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The judge&#8217;s original March 31 order said much of \u200bthe work needed to stop but that crews could continue &#8220;construction necessary to ensure the safety and security of \u200bthe White House.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Trump and federal agencies then asserted in court filings that the judge&#8217;s national security exception applied to the entire \u200cproject \u2060because of elements of the ballroom like missile-resistant columns and drone-proof roofing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump administration also argued that the ballroom and a planned military bunker underneath it are a &#8220;single, coherent whole.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Leon wrote in Thursday&#8217;s order that Trump and federal agencies &#8220;now seek to turn this exception on its head and unreasonably insist that the entire ballroom project may \u200bproceed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I cannot possibly agree,&#8221; the \u200bjudge wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In a series \u2060of social media posts on Thursday, Trump called Leon a &#8220;highly political&#8221; and &#8220;out of control&#8221; judge. The ruling prevents future presidents from having access to &#8220;bomb shelters&#8221; and &#8220;a State of \u200bthe Art Hospital and Medical Facilities,&#8221; Trump said, &#8220;which all means that no future \u200bPresident, living in \u2060the White House without this Ballroom, can ever be Safe and Secure at Events, Future Inaugurations, or Global Summits.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Former Republican President George W. Bush appointed Leon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump administration said in a court filing it would appeal Thursday&#8217;s order \u2060to the \u200bU.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The National Trust \u200bfor Historic Preservation had asked Leon to clarify his earlier injunction. After Trump appealed, the D.C.
