Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Sunday derided President Trump\u2019s latest threats to Iran as \u201cwar crimes\u201d if committed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTrump is calling reporters today to tell them he is going to commit mass war crimes next week,\u201d Murphy wrote on the social platform X. \u201cGOP leaders need to stop him. Never mind that blowing up bridges and power plants and killing innocent Iranians won\u2019t reopen the Strait. It\u2019s also a clear war crime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Early Sunday morning, the president wrote on his Truth Social platform, \u201cTuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the F\u2014in\u2019 Strait, you crazy bastards, or you\u2019ll be living in Hell \u2013 JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump reiterated his threats in multiple interviews on today, as Iran restricting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz continues to push energy prices up \u2014 including in the U.S., where the average price of a gallon of regular gas hit $4.11 on Sunday, according to AAA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Murphy further criticized Trump\u2019s threats against Iranian infrastructure targets, writing on X that he \u201cisn\u2019t even pretending to choose military targets\u201d and is willing to \u201ckill tens of thousands of civilians in order to cause a national panic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since the U.S. and Israel launched airstrikes against Iran on Feb. 28, more than 1,600 civilians in the Middle Eastern country, including at least 244 children, have been killed as of Sunday, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe says he\u2019s going to destroy ALL Iranian bridges and power plants,\u201d Murphy added, referring to the president. \u201cOk, he\u2019s probably lying. But even blowing up a fraction will kill thousands of innocent people who work in those power plants and travel on the nation\u2019s roads. That\u2019s also a war crime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd for what? To force Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz WHICH WAS OPEN BEFORE TRUMP STARTED BOMBING IRAN??? This is pure insanity,\u201d the Connecticut Democrat continued. \u201cIt won\u2019t work. It will just permanently stain America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGOP leaders should call Congress back into session this week to end this war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other Democratic lawmakers sharply criticized Trump\u2019s threats against Iran throughout Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) wrote on X that as millions of Americans \u201chead off to church and celebrate with friends and family\u201d for Easter, Trump is \u201cranting like an unhinged madman\u201d online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe\u2019s threatening possible war crimes and alienating allies,\u201d Schumer added. \u201cThis is who he is, but this is not who we are. Our country deserves so much better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) also wrote on X that Trump\u2019s rhetoric is \u201cdisgusting and unhinged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSomething is really wrong with this guy. Thank you for your attention to this matter,\u201d Jeffries added, invoking the president\u2019s signature tagline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) wrote on X, \u201cOne month after starting the war in Iran, this is the statement of the President of the United States on Easter Sunday,\u201d sharing a screenshot of the president\u2019s Truth Social post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThese are the ravings of a dangerous and mentally unbalanced individual,\u201d Sanders continued. \u201cCongress has got to act NOW. End this war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
