President Trump\u2019s decision to issue new import taxes across the globe following the Supreme Court\u2019s rebuke of his sweeping tariffs on Friday is drawing broad criticism, including from several Republican lawmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) told CNN\u2019s Brianna Keilar on Friday that Congress is sure to challenge the new tariffs and signaled confidence that the levies \u201cwill be defeated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt may not have a veto-proof majority, but it will have a majority that will go against that 10 percent global tariff, so I think the president is making a mistake here,\u201d Bacon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the high court ruled on Friday that the Trump administration unlawfully imposed tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), Trump imposed a new 10 percent global tariff. The executive order enacted the taxes under Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act, which allows for tariffs up to 15 percent for a duration of 150 days to address \u201clarge and serious\u201d trade deficits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The president, in a Saturday post on Truth Social, signaled he would up the tariffs to the full 15 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A majority of the Supreme Court, including two Trump-appointed justices, affirmed Congress\u2019s constitutional authority over federal taxes in its 6-3 decision to block the president\u2019s use of the IEEPA to impose tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Friday, Trump wrote online that the justices who ruled against him \u201cshould be ashamed of themselves,\u201d but he vowed to continue pursuing other avenues to enact his trade agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Friday decision follows a House vote earlier this month on a resolution to repeal the Trump administration\u2019s tariffs on Canada. Six Republican lawmakers, including Bacon, joined Democrats in voting in favor of this resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBottom line is any tariff that the president wants to do has to go through Congress and be approved. That\u2019s the bottom line from this ruling, and I agree with that,\u201d the Nebraska Republican told CNN. \u201cThat\u2019s what the founders wanted, and that\u2019s what Republicans should want. We have long held this view. Just because President Trump disagrees shouldn\u2019t change what Republicans believe in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump\u2019s tariffs have been subject to increasingly negative feedback from American consumers and lawmakers from both sides of the aisle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who supported a similar resolution to repeal Trump\u2019s tariffs that passed in the Senate last October, said the high court\u2019s decision leaves \u201cno room for doubt\u201d about Congress\u2019 constitutional authority over tariff decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCongress\u2019 role in trade policy, as I have warned repeatedly, is not an inconvenience to avoid,\u201d McConnell said. \u201cIf the executive would like to enact trade policies that impact American producers and consumers, its path forward is crystal clear: convince their representatives under Article 1.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) also hailed the court\u2019s ruling as a \u201cdefense of our Republic\u201d in a post on social platform X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
