Trump International Airport.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The bill,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2026\/706\/?Tab=BillHistory\"><u>SB 706<\/u><\/a>, leaves the names of all other airports the same but preempts the authority to rename airports to the state, not to local officials. The bill resembles a similar bill in the state House,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2026\/919\"><u>HB 919<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">All nine members of the Florida state Senate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/flsenate.gov\/Committees\/Show\/TR\"><u>Committee on Transportation<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;backed the bill, including three Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/donald-trump\/\"><u>President Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>is the first president that Florida has had in our history, and I think it\u2019s very appropriate for us to be naming one of the other icons in Palm Beach after him,\u201d state Sen. Debbie Mayfield (R), who sponsored the bill,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/01\/27\/florida-senators-clear-trump-airport-for-takeoff-00749925?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\"><u>told Politico<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The state committee&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2026\/706\/Amendment\/511648\/PDF\"><u>amended the bill<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to require the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to approve the name change. Renaming the airport would also require a possible rights agreement to commercially use the airport\u2019s new name at no cost for promotions, advertising, merchandising and branding for the airport and its operations, services and amenities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It is unclear who will pay for the name change, with county officials saying it could take between 18 and 24 months to completely rename the airport, Politico wrote. A concern is whether or not the name change could result in \u201can increase in general security threats,\u201d officials told the news outlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The bill will next be seen by a state House committee on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">For decades, President Trump has placed his name across buildings belonging to his business. Placing his name on buildings became a feature of the first year of his second term. In December, Trump\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5632450-trump-institute-peace-building\/\"><u>name was added<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) after the Department of Government Efficiency targeted it as part of its efforts to slash funding to government entities and cut back labor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The move was met with condemnation from USIP leadership. George Foote, an attorney who represented former USIP leadership and staff, said the name change \u201cadds insult to injury.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe rightful owners will ultimately prevail and will restore the U.S. Institute of Peace and the building to their statutory purposes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Weeks later, the Kennedy Center board&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5655279-kennedy-center-trump-kennedy\/\"><u>unanimously voted<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to rename the performing arts center to \u201cThe Donald J. Trump and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/john-f-kennedy-2\/\"><u>John F. Kennedy\u2002<\/u><\/a>Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The president said he was \u201csurprised and honored\u201d by the name change, but the move caused several artists and musicians to withdraw from performing, most of them citing differences with the administration, including composer Philip Glass&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/in-the-know\/5708527-philip-glass-kennedy-center-cancellation\/\"><u>on Tuesday<\/u><\/a>. The name change also drew condemnation from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5655708-kennedy-family-opposes-trump-kennedy-center\/\"><u>Kennedy family members<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A building in the works that could reportedly include Trump\u2019s name is the ballroom that will occupy the space where the White House\u2019s East Wing once stood.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/trump-white-house-ballroom-after-officials\/story?id=126843455\"><u>ABC News<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;reported in October that it would be called \u201cThe President Donald J. Trump Ballroom,\u201d though a senior White House official told NewsNation that no decision has been made on the name yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The following day, however, Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5573017-donald-trump-white-house-ballroom-name\/\"><u>dismissed the reporting<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;about the ballroom, saying there are no plans yet to name the ballroom after himself, calling the reporting \u201cfake news.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/5709400-palm-beach-airport-renamed-trump\/\">thehill<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A committee of Florida state senators on Tuesday unanimously advanced legislation to rename Palm Beach International Airport to \u201cDonald J.
