{"id":52847,"date":"2026-01-20T17:26:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T23:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=52847"},"modified":"2026-01-20T20:29:03","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T02:29:03","slug":"pressure-over-greenland-grows-as-trump-allies-descend-on-davos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=52847","title":{"rendered":"Pressure over Greenland grows as Trump, allies descend on Davos"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">President Trump will come face-to-face with European allies this week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, as tensions build on both sides of the Atlantic over Trump\u2019s insistence on the U.S. acquiring Greenland.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">On Saturday, the president slapped 10 percent tariffs on Denmark and its European allies to pressure them over the future of Greenland. Overnight, the president criticized the U.K. and shared a screenshot of a text conversation with French President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/emmanuel-macron\/\"><u>Emmanuel Macron\u2002<\/u><\/a>in which he voiced his discontent with Trump on the issue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The high-stakes meetings in Switzerland could play a significant role in determining the future of Washington\u2019s involvement in the Danish territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">U.K. Prime Minister&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/keir-starmer\/\"><u>Keir Starmer,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;who has led the country\u2019s charm offensive on Trump during his second term, issued a rare criticism of Trump\u2019s rhetoric on Greenland on Monday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny decision about the future status of Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland and the kingdom of Denmark alone,\u201d Starmer said at a news conference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Macron appeared to take a veiled jab at Trump during his address on stage at Davos, telling the audience, \u201cconflict has been normalized.\u201d The French leader said the \u201cendless accumulation of new tariffs\u201d is \u201cfundamentally unacceptable\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven more so when they are used as leverage against territorial sovereignty,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/mick-mulvaney\/\"><u>Mick Mulvaney,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;who served as Trump\u2019s chief of staff during his first administration, warned that Trump\u2019s actions on Greenland are leading to a growingly isolated U.S.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the first term, Trump was very clear to say \u2018America First\u2019 was not \u2018America Alone.\u2019 You get the impression that is changing in the second term,\u201d Mulvaney said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Former U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Alan Leventhal, who served in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/joe-biden\/\"><u>Biden\u2002<\/u><\/a>administration, said the announced U.S. tariffs have only \u201cunified\u201d the European Union.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe should expect the EU countries to stand up to the threats of higher tariffs,\u201d Leventhal said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In response to a question by The Hill during a briefing marking his first year in office, Trump said he still has a good relationship with Starmer and Macron, saying they get along \u201cvery well.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey get a little bit rough when they\u2019re, you know, when I\u2019m not around, but when I\u2019m around they treat me very nicely,\u201d Trump said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">However, when asked during the briefing whether he would attend the G7 meeting in Paris that Macron proposed to him over text, Trump said he would not.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, I wouldn\u2019t do that,\u201d the president said. \u201cBecause you know, Emmanuel\u2019s not going to be there for very long, and there\u2019s not longevity there. He\u2019s a friend of mine. He\u2019s a nice guy.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Macron\u2019s term as president of France ends in 2027, and he is term limited.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Trump and his allies have repeatedly argued Washington controlling Greenland would bolster U.S. national security amid concerns Russia and China are growing their influence in the Arctic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt matters to us because it matters to China and Russia,\u201d said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/nathan-sales\/\"><u>Nathan Sales,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;who served as the coordinator for counterterrorism and special envoy to the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS during the first Trump administration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cChina and Russia, long-term, will have an interest in exercising interest over Greenland, and that is not in the interest of the United States,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Russian Foreign Minister&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/sergey-lavrov\/\"><u>Sergey Lavrov\u2002<\/u><\/a>dubbed the debate over Greenland \u201ca deep crisis\u201d for NATO and its members.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was hard to imagine before that such a thing could happen,\u201d Lavrov said at a press conference Tuesday, arguing it could lead to an event in which \u201cone NATO member is going to attack another NATO member.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Mulvaney warned that a weakened NATO could be an unintended consequence of the deepening rift between Washington and its allies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Trump administration has got to figure out not only what the benefits are to acquiring Greenland but what the costs are to acquiring Greenland, and that\u2019s more than just money,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you ask me, \u2018Is the NATO alliance at risk?\u2019 Six months ago, I would have said no,\u201d he continued. \u201cNow, I think it\u2019s different.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Trump predicted Tuesday that both sides of the Atlantic would be happy with an eventual agreement for the U.S. to take over the Danish territory.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think we\u2019re going to work something out where NATO\u2019s going to be very happy, and we\u2019re going to be very happy. But we need it for security purposes,\u201d the president told reporters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Sales noted the diplomatic route as opposed to threatening other countries is one the Trump administration could take.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs important as Greenland is to the United States and our national security, we can get what we need more effectively by negotiating with our allies than by saber-rattling,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is where the question of ends and means comes in,\u201d Sales continued. \u201cWhile we certainly have a strong interest in Greenland being firmly in the American camp, the means we use to bring that about matter, because Russia\u2019s long goal going back to the Cold War has been to divide the transatlantic alliance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey failed to do it during the Cold War, but they haven\u2019t given up trying,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Trump notably has not ruled out military force to acquire Greenland, but the White House has said diplomacy was always the first option.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">European nations have very noticeably taken note of the rhetoric.
