{"id":52800,"date":"2026-01-19T15:03:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T21:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=52800"},"modified":"2026-01-19T21:07:31","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T03:07:31","slug":"top-us-catholic-cardinals-question-morality-of-american-foreign-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=52800","title":{"rendered":"Top US Catholic cardinals question morality of American foreign policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Jan 19 (Reuters) &#8211; Three U.S. Catholic archbishops on Monday decried the direction of American foreign policy, saying the country&#8217;s &#8220;moral role in confronting evil around the world&#8221; was in question and that military action must only be used as an extreme last resort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;In 2026, the United States has entered into the most profound and searing debate about the moral foundation for America&#8217;s actions in the world since the end of the Cold War,&#8221; the three highest-ranking U.S. Catholic archbishops said in a rare joint statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The statement by Cardinals Blase Cupich of Chicago, Robert McElroy of Washington and Joseph Tobin of Newark, echoes&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/pope-leo-decries-diplomacy-based-force-speech-vatican-envoys-2026-01-09\/\"><u>Pope Leo&#8217;s<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;fiery Vatican speech earlier this month denouncing the world&#8217;s &#8220;zeal for war&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Leo, the first U.S. pope, has previously criticized some of U.S. President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/donald-trump\/\"><u>Donald Trump&#8217;s<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;policies, in particular on immigration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Citing recent developments in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/venezuela\/\"><u>Venezuela<\/u><\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/ukraine-russia-war\/\"><u>Russia&#8217;s war in Ukraine<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/trump-tells-norway-he-no-longer-feels-obligation-think-only-peace-2026-01-19\/\"><u>threats against Greenland<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;by the Trump administration, the archbishops said rights of nations to self-determination appeared &#8220;fragile&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;The events in Venezuela, Ukraine and Greenland have raised basic questions about the use of military force and the meaning of peace,&#8221; the clerics said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The joint statement did not directly name Trump.
