{"id":52654,"date":"2026-01-15T21:47:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T03:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=52654"},"modified":"2026-01-16T01:56:57","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T07:56:57","slug":"judge-dismisses-trump-administration-lawsuit-seeking-california-voter-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=52654","title":{"rendered":"Judge dismisses Trump administration lawsuit seeking California voter data"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A federal judge Thursday dealt a significant legal setback to the Trump administration in its efforts to obtain voter data held by states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In a 33-page order, U.S. District Judge David O. Carter in California dismissed a lawsuit that sought to give the Justice Department access to the Democratic-led state\u2019s voter files, including records like Social Security numbers and driver\u2019s license information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">California is one of 23 states, along with Washington, D.C., that the Justice Department has sued for refusing to hand over the voter data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The lawsuit against California was filed in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cClean voter rolls are the foundation of free and fair elections,\u201d Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement at the time. \u201cEvery state has a responsibility to ensure that voter registration records are accurate, accessible, and secure \u2014 states that don\u2019t fulfill that obligation will see this Department of Justice in court.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The judge, a Clinton appointee, slammed those efforts in his ruling Thursday, writing that the administration&#8217;s request \u201cthreatens the right to vote which is the cornerstone of American democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe Department of Justice seeks to use civil rights legislation which was enacted for an entirely different purpose to amass and retain an unprecedented amount of confidential voter data,&#8221; Carter wrote. &#8220;The centralization of this information by the federal government would have a chilling effect on voter registration which would inevitably lead to decreasing voter turnout as voters fear that their information is being used for some inappropriate or unlawful purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The American Civil Liberties Union and other groups involved in the case praised the ruling in a joint statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe court has recognized the fundamental importance of protecting voters\u2019 sensitive personal information and dismissed this illegal federal overreach,&#8221; the statement said. &#8220;Voters should never have to choose between their privacy and their fundamental right to vote.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;Today\u2019s ruling affirms that the federal government is not entitled to unfettered access to private voter data,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In a separate case, a federal judge in Oregon said Wednesday that he was tentatively planning to dismiss the Justice Department\u2019s lawsuit in that state but that he would issue his final decision in a written opinion in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/judge-dismisses-doj-lawsuit-seeking-california-voter-data-rcna254337\">Nbcnews<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A federal judge Thursday dealt a significant legal setback to the Trump administration in its efforts to obtain voter data held by states.
