{"id":52601,"date":"2026-01-14T16:27:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T22:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=52601"},"modified":"2026-01-15T02:29:03","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T08:29:03","slug":"verizon-outage-locks-wireless-customers-in-sos-mode","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=52601","title":{"rendered":"Verizon outage locks wireless customers in SOS mode"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Jan. 14 (UPI) &#8212;&nbsp;Verizon Wireless is experiencing a widespread outage Wednesday with some customers saying their devices are stuck in SOS mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The outage began at about noon EST, DownDetector service outage detector showing an increase in customers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/5688950-verizon-outage-users-report-phones-stuck-in-sos-mode\/\">losing service<\/a>. Shortly after, Verizon customers began posting on social media that they were experiencing a loss of service or that their devices were stuck in SOS mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">SOS mode does not allow a cellphone to connect to the wireless network but emergency calls are still possible by using the signal from other networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Verizon&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VerizonNews\/status\/2011500483072954495\">acknowledged the outage in a post<\/a>&nbsp;on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers,&#8221; Verizon News posted. &#8220;Our engineers are engaged and are working to identify and solve the issue quickly.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">An&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/consumer\/verizon-outage-new-york-washington-rcna254050\">update an hour later said<\/a>&nbsp;that Verizon engineers continue working on the issue but it did not identify the reason for the outage or say when full service is expected to be restored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Verizon&#8217;s competitors T-Mobile and AT&amp;T said they are not experiencing any issues with their service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Emergency alert agencies in New York City and Washington, D.C., have responded to the outage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Washington, D.C., emergency notification system urged those affected to go to a police district or fire station directly to report emergencies, or use a device from another carrier if they can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">New York City&#8217;s emergency management team said it is working closely with &#8220;partners&#8221; on the outage and to &#8220;assess any potential effects on city agencies and essential services.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Top_News\/US\/2026\/01\/14\/verizon-outage-sos-mode-new-york-washington-dc\/4501768423904\/\">upi<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jan. 14 (UPI) &#8212;&nbsp;Verizon Wireless is experiencing a widespread outage Wednesday with some customers saying their devices are stuck in SOS mode.
