Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent\u2002<\/u><\/a>told Reuters<\/u><\/a> on Friday that the U.S. may lift some sanctions on Venezuela in order to facilitate oil sales. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bessent also said that nearly $5 billion in Venezuela\u2019s frozen International Monetary Fund (IMF) special drawing rights monetary assets could be used to rebuild its economy. The IMF has not engaged with Venezuela since the tenure of the late Venezuelan President Hugo Ch\u00e1vez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Treasury secretary noted that his department is willing to convert Venezuela\u2019s assets to dollars in order to rebuild the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the wake of the U.S. capturing Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s successor<\/u><\/a>, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, the long-term future of the South American country is unclear. President Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>has insisted that the U.S. will \u201crun\u201d<\/u><\/a> Venezuela until an orderly transition can occur; Maduro\u2019s vice president, Delcy Rodr\u00edguez, has assumed power in his stead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump reiterated those assertions<\/u><\/a> on Thursday, telling Fox News\u2019s<\/u><\/a> Sean Hannity\u2002<\/u><\/a>that Venezuela can only hold elections after the U.S. is finished rebuilding the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey couldn\u2019t have an election,\u201d the president said. \u201cThey wouldn\u2019t even know how to have an election right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Maduro was captured, Trump initially said that American oil companies will take control of Venezuela\u2019s petroleum reserves, the largest in world. But Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Wednesday that the administration does not plan on U.S. oil firms<\/u><\/a> entering the country immediately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIndefinitely, going forward, we will sell the production that comes out of Venezuela into the marketplace,\u201d Wright said at a Goldman Sachs energy conference in Miami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier in the week, Trump said that Venezuela will turn over 30 million to 50 million barrels of oil<\/u><\/a> to the U.S. The president added that the oil will be sold at market price, with the proceeds used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
