President Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>said Saturday that the U.S. will \u201crun\u201d Venezuela<\/u><\/a> until a transition takes place following the capture<\/u><\/a> of the country\u2019s President Nicholas Maduro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition,\u201d Trump said during a news conference<\/u><\/a> from his Mar-a-Lago resort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want to be involved with having somebody get in and we have the same situation that we had for the last long period of years,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked to clarify specifically who will run Venezuela, Trump said the U.S. will be running it with a team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to be running it with a group, and we\u2019re going to make sure it\u2019s run properly,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to make sure the people of Venezuela are taken care of and we\u2019re going to make sure the people of Venezuela who were forced out by this thug are taken care of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Venezuela\u2019s Vice President Delcy Rodriguez assumed power following Maduro\u2019s capture on Saturday. When asked if the U.S. would work with Rodriguez, Trump said Secretary of State Marco Rubio\u2002<\/u><\/a>has had a conversation with Rodriguez. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe\u2019s essentially willing to do what we think is necessary to make Venezuela great again,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump said Rodriguez was \u201cgracious\u201d but that she does not have \u201ca choice\u201d in the matter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president went on to note that the U.S. would also take control of its oil production<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs everyone knows, the oil business in Venezuela has been a bust, a total bust for a long period of time,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to have our very large United States oil companies, the biggest anywhere in the world, go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure, the oil infrastructure, and start making money for the country.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His remarks come hours after the U.S. arrested Maduro and his wife<\/u><\/a> on narco-terrorism charges<\/u><\/a> amid a strike on Venezuela overnight. The capture took place just days after the Venezuelan strongman said he was open to conducting negotiations<\/u><\/a> with the U.S. regarding drug trafficking and oil. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congressional leaders were reportedly notified<\/u><\/a> only after the operation was complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. attack follows months of tensions, jabs and threats from Trump and U.S. officials toward Maduro, who the U.S. government has accused of heading a drug cartel and was deemed an \u201cillegitimate leader.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trump administration has also accused Maduro of running a \u201cnarco-state\u201d and rigging the election in the South American country last year. In previous comments, the Venezuelan leader predicted that Washington wants to take control of his nation\u2019s oil reserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
