Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville\u2002<\/u><\/a>on Wednesday slammed incoming New York mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2002<\/u><\/a>for being sworn in with the Quran, the sacred scripture of Islam<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe enemy is inside the gates,\u201d Tuberville wrote in a post<\/u><\/a> on X, where he also posted a screenshot of a New York Times piece on Mamdani\u2019s historic decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mamdani, who will be NYC\u2019s first Muslim mayor, is expected to use at least three unique Qurans for his public and private swearing-in ceremonies, according to the New York Times<\/u><\/a>. While many elected officials choose to use religious text to take the oath of office, they are not required by law to use any text or book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mayor-elect has received pushback from both Democrats and Republicans for promising citywide rent freezes, free child care and free public transportation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not going to work. It has never worked anywhere. It\u2019s been tried. And there\u2019s a reason why so many folks from around the globe have fled communism and socialism to come to the United States in search of opportunity and a better life, primarily economic opportunity through our capitalist markets,\u201d Republican Rep. Mike Lawler\u2002<\/u><\/a>(N.Y.) said during a Wednesday appearance on Fox Business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dutch politician Geert Wilders\u2002<\/u><\/a>also weighed in with a separate post<\/u><\/a> that read, \u201cInvalid oath. No Quran. USA is not Islamic. Yet. Wake up America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite religious criticism from the right, Mamdani has held firm to his administration\u2019s objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThank you to every New Yorker who believed in this fight for working people,\u201d the mayor wrote<\/u><\/a> in an X post hours before his swearing-in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Bernie Sanders\u2002<\/u><\/a>(I-Vt.) is set to swear in Mamdani after months of supporting him as the city\u2019s next leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cZohran and his supporters showed the world that when working people stand together, we can defeat the Democratic and Republican establishments, Trump and the Oligarchs,\u201d Sanders wrote<\/u><\/a> on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
