RJ May (R), who pleaded guilty this year to distributing child sexual abuse material, according to Decision Desk HQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Lastinger, a pastor, defeated Democrat and retired Army Col. Joseph \u201cChuck\u201d Hightower to win state House District 88, representing the reliably red Lexington County seat until the current term ends next fall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The seat opened up when May&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/schousespeaker\/status\/1954991063888011613\"><u>resigned in August<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;after being&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sc\/pr\/west-columbia-man-indicted-distributing-child-sexual-abuse-material\"><u>charged with distributing<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;child sexual abuse material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">May&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sc\/pr\/former-state-lawmaker-pleads-guilty-distributing-child-sexual-abuse-material\"><u>pleaded guilty<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to five counts this fall, according to documents from the U.S. attorney\u2019s office for the District of South Carolina. He faces the possibility of significant prison time as he heads to sentencing in January.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">U.S. Attorney Bryan Stirling said the conduct to which May pleaded guilty represented \u201csome of the most depraved and exploitative conduct we investigate.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The South Carolina Freedom Caucus, which May&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/sc\/south-carolina\/politics\/2025\/07\/29\/south-carolina-politics-rj-may-expel-\"><u>helped found<\/u><\/a>,&nbsp;welcomed&nbsp;the resignation but argued the state House&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=803314112370170&amp;set=a.121255037242751\"><u>should have acted<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to expel the lawmaker instead, calling the matter an \u201cugly chapter\u201d for the state chamber.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Lastinger, who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southcarolinapublicradio.org\/sc-news\/2025-11-04\/john-lastinger-wins-gop-runoff-in-race-to-replace-ex-sc-rep-rj-may\"><u>narrowly won<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;the GOP primary earlier this year,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/johnlastinger.com\/\"><u>pitched himself<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;as a staunch conservative Republican running to champion Christian values, touting his support for anti-abortion policies and Second Amendment rights.
