Senate Republicans are growing increasingly uneasy with the Pentagon\u2019s investigation into Sen. Mark Kelly\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D-Ariz.) after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth\u2002<\/u><\/a>announced his office is escalating its probe into him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Defense Department announced Monday that the review of Kelly has risen to an \u201cofficial Command Investigation,\u201d<\/strong> intensifying the feud between the two sides over Kelly\u2019s role in a video he and other congressional Democrats made to remind service members of their duty to disobey illegal orders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly has been under fire by the administration for nearly a month<\/strong> after he, Sen. Elissa Slotkin\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D-Mich.) and Democratic Reps. Jason Crow\u2002<\/u><\/a>(Colo.), Chris Deluzio\u2002<\/u><\/a>(Pa.), Maggie Goodlander (N.H.) and Chrissy Houlahan\u2002<\/u><\/a><\/a>(Pa.) appeared in the video that set off the series of comments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump also called for the execution<\/strong> of the half-dozen lawmakers \u2014 a remark he walked back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Days after the Democrats released the joint video, the Defense Department said it received \u201cserious allegations of misconduct\u201d against Kelly and that it kicked off a \u201cthorough review\u201d<\/strong> of the allegations. Hegseth ordered the Navy to finish the review and submit it to the Defense Department by Dec. 10. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Navy submitted the report on potential punishments against Kelly to the department\u2019s Office of General Counsel last week. The content and the scope of the report are unclear.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What isn\u2019t being walked back is the probe, which some Senate Republicans believe likely does not have merit.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not,\u201d Sen. Susan Collins\u2002<\/u><\/a>(R-Maine) said when asked whether she is comfortable with the expansion of the probe. \u201cHe is protected by the speech and debate clause.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hegseth appeared Tuesday on Capitol Hill alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio\u2002<\/u><\/a>to brief lawmakers on the administration\u2019s targeting of boats near Venezuela. Hegseth and Kelly got into a \u201clong back-and-forth\u201d<\/strong> during the briefing, according to Sen. Josh Hawley\u2002<\/u><\/a>(R-Mo.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to one Senate Republican, the spat started with a reasonable question on Kelly\u2019s end but eventually turned into a protracted discussion with GOP members complaining he was \u201cfilibustering\u201d<\/strong> during a classified briefing when other attendees had questions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly said Hegseth brought up \u201ctalking points\u201d<\/strong> about the video when he was asking the Pentagon chief about the strikes on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly told reporters following the briefing that the Pentagon still has not reached out to him<\/strong> about the investigation and argued the department is targeting him \u201cfor something I said that was lawful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
