{"id":51262,"date":"2025-12-15T09:49:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T15:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=51262"},"modified":"2025-12-15T21:54:57","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T03:54:57","slug":"why-florida-is-ground-zero-for-coming-obamacare-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=51262","title":{"rendered":"Why Florida is ground zero for coming ObamaCare storm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Florida will be hit harder than any other state if ObamaCare subsidies expire at the end of the year, which is looking increasingly likely as Republicans in Congress&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/5639556-swing-state-republican-senators-health-insurance\/\"><u>struggle to unite<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;behind a plan to extend the tax credits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">More than 1.5 million Floridians could lose health care as monthly payments skyrocket. Average premium costs could shoot up by 132 percent, or by $521 annually, for Floridians who currently receive enhanced ObamaCare subsidies, according to the Center for American Progress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Florida&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/affordable-care-act\/state-indicator\/marketplace-enrollment\/?currentTimeframe=0&amp;sortModel={:,:}\"><u>leads the country<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in the number of individuals enrolled in an Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace plan, with 1 out of 5 Floridians, or 4.7 million people, benefiting from subsidized health insurance, according to KFF, a nonprofit organization focused on health policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Sunshine State\u2019s relatively large number of small-business owners and hospitality workers account for the particularly high reliance on ACA plans, said Erica Li, a health policy analyst at Florida Policy Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to see, unfortunately, a rise in the amount of people who are uninsured. And that\u2019s unfortunate, because even if a person is young and chooses to forgo health insurance because they may be healthier, you never know if you\u2019ll have an accident or diagnosis that will require health care coverage and continual care,\u201d Li said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The rising costs could also be front of mind for voters heading into next year\u2019s midterms, though Susan MacManus, political analyst at the University of South Florida, said it\u2019s too soon to say whether Democrats can gain an advantage in the increasingly red state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe bottom line is that we don\u2019t know how it\u2019ll play out, because we don\u2019t know what the Florida Legislature might do to affect health care costs. There are some proposals and bills that are on the table. They haven\u2019t really been publicized much yet, so we don\u2019t know exact details, a lot of moving pieces here, but without question, people are very worried about it,\u201d MacManus said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYou can\u2019t predict from one week to the next what\u2019s going to dominate people\u2019s thinking. And right now, the first thing on people\u2019s minds is something that\u2019s going to cost them more,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Gallup polling last week showed that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/5638360-aca-affordable-care-act-obama-care-approval\/\"><u>across the country<\/u><\/a>, ACA approval hit a new high of 57 percent, up from 54 percent in November 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Carlos Otero, a 60-year-old Miami resident, is among the millions of Floridians bracing for rising health insurance costs. He used to own a small consumer research consulting firm, but was hit hard&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/5379768-usaids-closure-global-death-toll\/\"><u>by cuts to the<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;U.S. Agency for International Development earlier this year and has since turned to gig work to pay the bills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Unless Congress acts before Jan. 1, his premium of $20 for him and his husband through AmeriHealth is set to jump to $200. Otero said he plans on switching to a lower-cost plan that will also cover less.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cFor a household that is living from paycheck to paycheck [needing] to pay $200 [for health care coverage] will be $200 less for food, applications that I need to find [a] job or for [the] internet. [These] are vital,\u201d Otero said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe need to cover the basics, and having affordable care helps a lot,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Florida is also among a handful of states that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/3914916-these-10-states-have-not-expanded-medicaid\/\"><u>declined to expand<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;Medicaid coverage during the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/joe-biden\/\"><u>Biden\u2002<\/u><\/a>administration, further compounding concerns over health insurance costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/eric-johnson\/\"><u>Eric Johnson,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;a Florida-based Democratic strategist, said the issue will have particular resonance with voters given&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/newsletters\/morning-report\/5640001-trump-speech-pennsylvania-economy\/\"><u>a broader anxiety<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;over affordability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThis is going to have hit them at a time that\u2019s already hard, and I think Republicans and the administration will take a great deal of blame for that, and it is an issue Democrats will do very good to communicate,\u201d Johnson said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Last month,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/tony-fabrizio\/\"><u>Tony Fabrizio,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;a top pollster for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/donald-trump\/\"><u>President Trump,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;said one way for Republicans to steer conversations away from expiring subsidies would be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/newsletters\/the-movement\/5639610-maga-populism-obamacare-movement\/\"><u>to focus on reducing drug prices,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;given Trump\u2019s recent deals with drug companies.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Johnson said voters want to see action on drug prices and health insurance costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt\u2019s certainly smart for them to be talking about drug prices as an issue, but people don\u2019t see it as an either or. People see it as, \u2018Yes, we need that fixed too,\u2019\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Otero comes from a family of Cuban Americans who overwhelmingly voted for Trump. He sees his family members changing their tune because of concerns stemming from health care affordability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI am seeing right now more and more relatives that are very red, very Republican, considering changing. I have an aunt that became a citizen, and she voted for Trump, and now she called him \u2018El Loco,\u2019\u201d Otero said, which means \u201cThe Madman.\u201d \u201cNow, she sees there are a lot of problems with health care as well, because one of my cousins has a brain tumor that has been controlled [and] is being treated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cFor them, affordable care is important, and they have been having issues too. So now it\u2019s real.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Florida ranks third in the nation for percentage of uninsured residents, topped only by Texas and Oklahoma, according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/miamioh.edu\/news\/2025\/10\/why-are-4.7-million-floridians-insured-through-aca-marketplace-plans-and-what-happens-if-they-lose-their-subsidies.html\"><u>Miami University report<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Florida Policy Institute projects that rate could increase by 6 percentage points in 2026, from almost 11 percent to almost 17 percent, which would leave between 1.1 million and 1.9 million additional Floridians being priced out of receiving health care coverage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Public health and policy experts point out that the pain will not only be political.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Aside from hurting the pockets of millions of Floridians, the state could lose $5.5 billion of its gross domestic product and nearly 50,000 jobs, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealthfund.org\/publications\/issue-briefs\/2025\/mar\/cost-eliminating-enhanced-premium-tax-credits\"><u>Commonwealth Fund<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Hospitals in Florida could also see an influx of uninsured people utilizing emergency services, which could put more strain on an already overwhelmed health care system, said Mary Mayhew, president of the Florida Hospital Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Scott Darius, executive director of Florida Voices for Health, said people are overlooking the impact the coming ObamaCare storm will have on people who have insurance through employers or other programs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe missed the lesson that we\u2019re all really dependent on each other, especially in terms of public health,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cMy big fear when you have this many more uninsured people introduced into the population [is] more disease and untreated conditions that continue to proliferate, but then you also have less money in the system to really bolster those points of care,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/5640956-rising-healthcare-costs-florida-obamacare-subsidies\/\">thehill<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florida will be hit harder than any other state if ObamaCare subsidies expire at the end of the year, which is looking increasingly likely as Republicans in Congress&nbsp;struggle to unite&nbsp;behind a plan to extend the tax credits.&nbsp; More than 1.5 million Floridians could lose health care as monthly payments skyrocket.
