Dec. 10 (UPI) — OpenAI’s ChatGPT generative artificial intelligence app topped Apple’s 2025 list of the most-downloaded free apps that iPhone owners installed this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ChatGPT is a large-language AI program capable of writing, answering questions, explaining topics, creating computer code and offering insights for users, according to Coursera<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It finished fourth among iPhone downloads last year, whenthe Chinese shopping app Temu topped Apple’s list of most-downloaded apps, TechCrunch reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ChatGPT did not rank among the 10 top app downloads for theiPhone in 2023, which was the first year it was offered for the smartphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Its meteoric rise over the past two years affirms the importance that iPhone owners place on AI, which enabled the free ChatGPT app to finish ahead of popular social media apps and often-used utilities, such as Google<\/a> Maps, according to TechCrunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n AI apps have demonstrated their versatility, which Bitcoin World<\/a> said is changing how people use their mobile devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ChatGPT and other popular AI apps are saving people time, personalizing their search experiences and make iPhones and other mobile devices and computers more effective learning tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Its rise to the top spot was foretold by ChatGPT attaining the top app download status in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Threads, Google, TikTok and WhatsApp rounded out the five top free app downloads, while the top paid apps were HotSchedules, Shadowrocket and Procreate Pocket, Mac Rumors<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The most popular free iPhone games downloaded this year are Block Blast, Fortnite and Roblox, and the top paid iPhone games are Minecraft, Balatro and Heads Up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n News of ChatGPT dominating free-app downloads for the iPhone comes after Apple’s Senior Vice President for Machine Learning and AI Strategy John Giannandrea announced his pending retirement<\/a> in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Giannandrea served in that role since 2018 and will help advise his incoming replacement until April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Apple also announced hiring AI researcher Amar Subramanya as its vice president of AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Subramanya will report to Apple Software Engineering SeniorVice President Craig Federighi in his new role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
